Teri Twarkins Kelley

I entered a sprint triathlon in 2009 after being told by a doctor that I had osteopenia, a bone density problem that can be corrected by load-bearing activities like weight training or running. I had been a cyclist for 2 years prior and decided that adding running back into my regime would be a good idea. I signed up for my first sprint with one week of training. After almost drowning in Lake Pleasant, I had a blast on the bike and run and was hooked. I love the multi-disciplinary perspective of this sport. I have always been a competitive person, and competing feeds right into this passion.

I love the Ironman distance. I love six hour bike rides. I love long runs. I love the pain that comes from pushing so hard until it hurts. And, I love getting into the pain zone in a race. I just LOVE it.

I have raced 5 Ironman races: IMAZ in 2010, Ironman Canada in 2011, Kona World Championship in 2011, Ironman Louisville in 2012, and Ironman Cabo in 2013. I love a difficult bike course and a run course with few loops.

Why do you do triathlon? Triathlon balances my life. I am a better spouse, a better mother, a better financial planner, and an overall more balanced person when I am training and racing.

What are your top 5 race results? Ironman Canada 2011 (10:47 - 3rd AG); Ironman World Championship 2011 (10:56), Ironman Louisville 2012 (10:58 - 3rd AG), Superfrog Half Iron 2011 - (4:47, 1st Amateur Female), Desert Classic Half Marathon 2012 (1:28, 1st OA Female)

What’s your favorite race and why? How can the answer to this not be Kona?!

What’s your favorite workout? I love a long, long, long bike ride... 100+ miles, alone. Makes me sound crazy, and maybe I am!

How do you celebrate after a big race? A fabulous micro brew, ideally dark. Maybe 2. And a great night of sleep.

What' s a hobby of yours besides triathlon? I love running around with my family - Tyson, the kids and the dogs - doing pretty much anything: hiking, at the park, hanging out at the house, vacation... anything.

What is your ultimate triathlon goal? To win my age group in an Ironman.
