Dan Mikkelson

Bio: I signed up for my first triathlon (half ironman) in 2008 after a few too many drinks with one of my college swimming teammates. I didn’t train properly and the race was horrible, but I did find something I knew I could enjoy. After spending the summer of 2009 in Europe, I decided to jump all in for 2010 by signing up for Ironman Wisconsin. I found a free online training plan and spent the winter and spring of 2010 on spin machines and treadmills at Lifetime Fitness in the frozen tundra of Minneapolis.  I purchased a triathlon bike in March and the rest was history.

I have raced 3 Ironman races: Ironman Wisconsin in 2010, Kona in 2011, and Ironman Cabo in 2013. I love ocean swims and challenging bike courses.

I race triathlon because I need something to push me on a daily basis -and long distance triathlon allows me to do that.

Home: Phoenix since 2011 (spent 2013 in Chicago, IL)

What’s your favorite race and why? While Kona will give me memories I will never forget, my favorite race is the Chisago Lakes Half Ironman in Chisago City, MN. It was my first triathlon and still is a fantastic race.

What’s your favorite workout? I love intensity bike rides on the trainer.  They are quick, effective, and give you constant benchmarks as you build your fitness into a season.

How do you celebrate after a big race? Beer and burgers… and then more beer.

What’s a hobby of yours besides triathlon? I love watching college football and baseball. While I do enjoy the active lifestyle triathlon brings, not much can beat sitting on the couch with a beer on Saturday afternoon watching a big college game. My dad taught me at a young age to cheer for Alabama Football. After one trip to Tuscaloosa I was hooked. ROLL TIDE!

What is your 2014 triathlon goal? My primary goal is to make it through the year without taking a single shirtless picture with Dan Cadriel.  I would also love to qualify for the 70.3 World’s in Canada and finish my second 70.3 with my dad!

2014 Race Schedule:
2/16: Lost Dutchman Half Marathon
3/2: Desert Classic Duathlon

9/7: 70.3 World Championships Mt. Tremblant (*Tentative)
9/21: Tempe Triathlon - Olympic
